About MPG to Liters

MPG to Liters is a free fuel economy converter. It converts between miles per gallon, litres per 100 kilometres and kilometres per litre, with separate handling for the US gallon and the imperial gallon, and it also converts the distance and volume units those figures are built from. Every calculation runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The site exists because the existing converters for this job mostly get one thing wrong: they offer a single 'mpg' box without asking which gallon it means. The imperial gallon is a fifth larger than the US gallon, so the same car has two mpg figures that differ by 20%, and a converter that does not ask is handing half its visitors the wrong answer. Every converter here has the switch, and every table labels its gallon.

Three definitions, all exact in law: the US gallon is 3.785411784 litres (231 cubic inches, with the inch defined as 25.4 mm since 1959); the imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres (UK Weights and Measures Act 1985); the mile is 1.609344 km (the 1959 international yard and pound agreement). Every constant on the site is derived from those three by arithmetic, and the derivations are tested.

The maths lives in a single module that every page imports. The converter, the tables, the value pages and the figures quoted in the guides all read from it, so a number in one place cannot disagree with the same number in another. When a figure on the site is a fact about the world rather than a conversion, such as an official fuel economy rating or a government test procedure, the guide says where it came from.

Aurangzeb Khan builds and maintains a group of free reference and calculator sites, of which this is one. He writes the guides, checks every constant against its primary source, and keeps the conversion code in one tested place so the site cannot contradict itself. He is not a motoring journalist or an engineer, and the site does not pretend otherwise; its claim is that its arithmetic is right and its sources are named.

Corrections are welcome. If a figure is wrong, a source is missing, or a guide is unclear, write to hello@mpgtoliters.com or use the contact page. Errors of fact are fixed and the guide's updated date is changed.

It does not collect what you type. It does not require an account, and it has no limits on use. It does not convert MPGe for electric cars, because no litre figure sits behind that unit and a conversion would be misleading. It does not publish reviews or recommend cars; the fuel economy table lists official ratings for scale and says plainly that they are approximate.

The site may show advertising in the marked spaces below and between sections, never above or inside a converter. Advertising does not influence what the site says, and no page exists to carry an advertisement.
